Level up your gingerbread house this year!
If you remember the magic of Christmas shopping at ZCMI stores, you’re in for a real treat!
Rebekah Brinkerhoff brought that charm back to life with a stunning (and fully edible!) gingerbread house. She shared her inspiration, techniques, and tips for creating your own gingerbread masterpiece.
Rebekah’s project was inspired by a cherished family tradition of admiring the festive window displays at ZCMI during Christmas. She wanted to build this gingerbread house as a tribute to those memories, capturing the nostalgic holiday magic and creativity.
Icing Consistency
Rebekah shared some invaluable tips on icing consistency, crucial for any gingerbread house project:
- Flooding Consistency: Perfect for covering large areas smoothly. Use this for the base layer of your gingerbread house.
- Intricate Details: A medium consistency is ideal for adding fine, intricate details. A little thicker than flooding consistency, but not as thick as the ‘thick glue’ consistency.
- Thick Glue Consistency: This consistency is essential for assembling the house. It can act as a strong adhesive to hold parts and pieces together.
The Super Glue of the Baking World: Isomalt
Rebekah introduced another key ingredient: isomalt. Known as the super glue of the baking world, isomalt is a sugar substitute that hardens quickly and is perfect for creating clear, glass-like windows and attaching delicate pieces.
For those inspired to create their own gingerbread houses, Rebekah sells gingerbread kits on her page. Each kit includes pre-baked gingerbread pieces, icing, decorations, and detailed instructions to help you build your own creation.
